Department of Internal Medicine Work Hours Policy

  • One in five nights on call during wards
  • One in eight nights on call during ICU
  • workweek restricted to 80 hours and one day off in seven while on wards

INSURANCE

Professional liability coverage: Residents are provided with $1,000,000/1,000,000 Per Occurrence Comprehensive Professional Liability coverage during the performance of contractual duties until termination or completion of the residency training.

Personal Insurance: The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine (OUCM-T) offers a flexible comprehensive group insurance program called Sooner Options, that can be spent for medical insurance, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance and dental insurance. Residents also have the option of using the credits to purchase other insurance or receive them as taxable take-home pay.

Medical Insurance: Provided for each resident, with OUCM-T paying the premium. Residents who wish to cover dependents must pay the dependent premium costs.

Dental Insurance: Provided for each resident, with OUCM-T paying the premiums for basic coverage. Residents who wish to cover dependents must pay the dependent premium costs.

Life Insurance: Coverage amounts to one and one-half times annual pay, and is paid for by OUCM-T. Residents who wish to purchase additional coverage or family coverage may do so according to a schedule of limits and costs.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment: $20,000 is paid by OUCM-T and supplied to each resident at no cost. Residents who wish to purchase additional coverage or family coverage may do so according to a schedule of limits and costs.

Long-Term Disability: Residents are covered by a group policy provided by the University during residency. Upon leaving residency the resident will have the option to convert the policy to an individual policy.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA): The University of Oklahoma’s Interim Family and Medical Leave Policy, which incorporates provisions of existing University policies and the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, is designed to enable employees to balance their work responsibilities with the demands of caring for family members or in the event of serious personal illness or injury.

The FMLA policy allows qualified employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid time off for births or adoptions, to care for spouse, child or parent with a serious health condition or for the employee’s serious health condition. Accrued sick leave and/or vacation could be used as appropriate. The OUCM-T Human Resources Office can assist you with the rules and use of this policy.
