International Medical
School Graduates
OU-Tulsa welcomes all International Medical School Graduates who are interested in applying for a residency position. Our requirements for International Graduates are listed below.
Resident Eligibility Policy
Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada must meet each of the following qualifications:
- Hold a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
- Are citizens of the United States, or hold a permanent immigrant visa (“green card”), or are eligible to hold a J-1 visa.
- For those requesting any type of visa, USMLE Step III
MUST be passed before submitting your application.
Application Requirements
- Minimum score of 80 on USMLE exams, preferably on the first attempt.
- A graduation date of no longer than 5 years prior to the start of the application year. For example, the latest graduation date possible for those submitting their applications during the 2008 – 2009 application year is July 1, 2004
- Minimum of three months clinical experience in the United States. This includes observerships and externships, but NOT research.
- Three letters of recommendation from a United States licensed physician (preferably professors affiliated with a medical school) who have observed and have knowledge of your clinical skills. It is preferred that the letters come from a physician in the field of internal medicine or a subspecialty of internal medicine.
- A fully completed ERAS application, including (but not limited to) the following:
- The common application form
- USMLE transcript
- ECFMG report and certificate.
- Medical School transcript.
- Dean’s letter
- Personal Statement
