Every year, millions of people around the world contract influenza, commonly known as seasonal flu. This contagious respiratory illness, caused by influenza viruses, can cause mild to severe illness and even death. Between five and 20 percent of the population become ill with seasonal flu annually, and some 36,000 people die from it. Some people are more at risk of getting the seasonal flu, including the elderly, young children and those with certain health conditions.
Health officials are especially concerned about the 2009 flu season because in addition to seasonal flu, there is now a different strain of the virus called 2009 H1N1, also known as swine flu. Check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website listed below for the latest information on H1N1. The World Health Organization signaled that a pandemic of novel H1N1 flu was underway on June 11, 2009. It is recommended that people take the vaccine available for both kinds of flu.
The best way to prevent the flu is to take preventive measures including the following:
The OU School of Community Medicine Influenza Planning Committee has developed contingency plans for influenza season to assure that students, faculty and staff are prepared to manage any situations that may arise.
Flu Leave Policy Guidelines - In order to provide guidance to employees and supervisors regarding policy issues that may arise during this flu season, the Office of Human Resources has provided guidelines for leave and other frequently asked questions.
